February through April 2015 the “Ukrainian New Health Technologies Centers” Association together with the Healthcare Ministry of Ukraine conducted a survey in 42 Ukrainian cities. The results showed about 60% of the population being overweight or obese.

In Ukraine, obesity is almost equally common among men and women. In turn, 44.3% of men and 30.1% of women are overweight. The striking fact is that about 70% of the population do not engage in regular physical activity and 75% are not consistent in their diet. It should also be noted that obesity and excess weight may cause the development of chronic diseases. Thus, the percentage of obese patients with chronic diseases (64.6%) is significantly higher than that among the people with normal weight (39.1%).

These data emphasize the need and importance of physical activity and proper nutrition. The Association intends to change this state of affairs by creating socially responsible approach to fashion and a healthy lifestyle.

The survey has become the first step in the project “Healthy Nation – Strong Ukraine”, which was supported by the National Public Organization “Community of Social Entrepreneurs” and many professional organizations. It played a decisive role in the further roundtable discussion, which took place on April 7th, the World Health Day, and in the formation of actions aimed at improving the quality of life of Ukrainians.

The study was conducted by the “Ukrainian New Health Technologies Centers” Association.
Polls training – Oleg V. Shvets, chief freelance nutritionist of MOH of Ukraine.
